Supporting informationIn this episode, Katie and Tex explore how AI is being used to help tackle plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is a huge problem which is affecting oceans all over the world - this happens when people drop litter, and it gets washed or blown into rivers and seas. AI is now being used to help tackle the problem.AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is like a smart computer program that is trained by humans, to learn and solve problems like we do. Humans are now training AI to find and recycle plastic from the ocean. The way this works is that the AI is programmed with lots of different images and videos of things from the ocean’s natural environment. It’s also shown pictures and videos of plastic rubbish so that it understands what that looks like and how it moves.When it comes across something, it can then use everything it has learned to work out what it is and what to do with it! Other AI powered machines then help to sort the plastic into piles so that it can be recycled correctly. Remember though, AI can sometimes get things wrong, so it is always learning and getting better each time.AI could also be used in the future to design new types of plastic that are easier to recycle and better for our planet!The challenge<ul><li>Choose an item of plastic that may be found in the ocean - draw something that it could be turned into, how could it be recycled?</li></ul>
