Key Information ● Hours and Start Date: 1 day a week asap ● Salary: £250 per day ● Contract type: 3 months with potential for extension ● Location: Remote working ● Reports to: COO ● Line Management responsibilities: None About Tech She Can Tech She Can is a UK charity on a mission to improve diversity and gender balance in technology. We inspire children and young people from all backgrounds to consider a future career in tech, and we collaborate with industry and education partners to create lasting, systemic change. We are growing our impact capabilities and are looking for an ambitious early-career data analyst who understands how to collect data and how to use data to tell powerful, human stories. Role purpose You will support Tech She Can by collecting, maintaining, and analysing data that demonstrates the impact of our programmes, particularly on gender equality and social mobility. Your work will help us understand what’s working, identify opportunities to improve, and tell compelling stories to funders, schools, and the wider community. This role is ideal for someone with strong analytical skills, early experience with coding/data tools, and a passion for using data for social good. Key Responsibilities Data Collection and management: ● Work closely with the Education teams to design simple, efficient approaches to collect high-quality data from schools, participants, and partners. ● Maintain and improve centralised datasets and trackers (e.g., Google Sheets, Excel, Power BI datasets). ● Clean, quality-check, and organise data to ensure accuracy and consistency. ● Develop automated processes where possible to minimise manual work. Analysis and reporting: ● Analyse participation, demographic and engagement data to understand trends, including gender balance and social mobility indicators. ● Create dashboards and regular reports in Power BI and Google Sheets/Looker Studio that are easy for non-technical colleagues to understand. ● Support the development of KPIs and metrics that demonstrate our outcomes and long-term impact. ● Work with he senior leadership team leads to translate insights into recommendations for programme improvement. Impact storytelling: ● Turn data into compelling narratives for funders, trustees, partners, and public audiences. ● Support quarterly and annual impact reporting with visuals, charts, and written insights ● Help identify and showcase success stories, case studies, and meaningful trends. ● Stay up to date with social mobility research, gender equity data, and relevant sector benchmarks. Skills and experience Essential: ● Early experience working with data (internship, placement, junior role, academic project, or equivalent). ● Ability to write basic code for data manipulation. ● Strong proficiency with Google Sheets (including formulas, data validation, pivot tables). ● Experience building interactive dashboards, ideally in Power BI and Looker Studio. ● Understanding of demographic and social mobility indicators. ● Ability to communicate data clearly to non-technical audiences. ● Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality. ● A passion for Tech She Can’s mission and the idea of using data for social impact. Shaping Futures: Exploring Factors Behind Children’s Career Choices – Webinar with Open Kids Africa

Our session&nbsp; “Shaping Futures: Exploring the Factors Behind Children’s Career Choices” brought together <a href="https://techshecan.org/meet-the-team">Becky Patel </a>(Head of Education at Tech She Can) and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/reginankenchor/">Regina Nkenchor</a> (Founder of OpenKids Africa) to share insights from both the UK and Nigeria, highlighting the shared challenges and opportunities when it comes to inspiring young people to consider careers in technology.&nbsp;In a world of ever-growing software and programs, Regina noted that “you really don't need to be within the four walls of a classroom to get access to technology”, and this session highlighted how you can have a pathway into tech, no matter what your background is.&nbsp;We delved into the differences and similarities of these influences, using Tech She Can’s experience in the UK, and OpenKids Africa’s background in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. &nbsp;Becky and Regina had an insightful conversation about the current career choices children are making, and some of the perceptions children have on specific roles and industries. The main influences both in Africa and the UK discussed were:Family and Cultural Influence Family and culture play a huge role in shaping children's views on careers. In both the UK and Nigeria, there’s often a strong preference for careers seen as stable or prestigious, like medicine or law, while tech can still feel unfamiliar or uncertain to some parents - something Regina herself experienced as a young teen.&nbsp;Reaching parents is a challenge, especially those not working in tech themselves. That’s why Tech She Can and OpenKids Africa run parent workshops and <a href="https://techshecan.org/live-assemblies">twilight sessions&nbsp;t</a>o help families better understand tech careers and their relevance in today’s world.Personal Interests and Passions Children’s hobbies and interests can be powerful indicators of future careers. Whether it’s storytelling, gaming, or art, these passions often link closely to roles in tech. We know children have aspirations that they can tangibly see in their day to day lives, but very few envision a career in tech. Becky noted that “there is no wrong career choice, and we’ll never discourage a child from what they want to do, but we will always try to showcase the pathways available to them”.&nbsp;At Tech She Can, we’re working to show that tech isn’t just about coding,&nbsp; it’s also about creativity, communication, and problem-solving. Through <a href="https://techshecan.org/lesson-packs">cross-curricular learning</a> and <a href="https://techshecan.org/role-models">real-life role models, </a>we help children see how their unique interests can lead to exciting and rewarding tech careers. Socioeconomic Status Access matters. Children in areas with fewer resources often have limited exposure to the world of work, especially tech. If you’ve never met someone in the industry or left your town, it’s harder to imagine these roles as possible.&nbsp;That’s why both charities focus on children in areas that need us most, and provide <a href="https://techshecan.org/girlsinaisummit">experiences that broaden their horizons.</a> We’re also passionate about highlighting alternative routes into tech such as apprenticeships and vocational training, so that financial barriers don’t close the door on potential.About <a href="https://www.openkidsafrica.org/">OpenKids Africa: </a>OpenKids Africa is a non-profit organisation dedicated to bridging the digital divide by providing free, high-quality technology education to children in rural African communities. As part of Safer Internet Day 2025, we reached an astonishing 60,000 students in just one day - we’re completely delighted that this was our BIGGEST audience ever!Working in collaboration with the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust (RAFCT), we delivered engaging live lessons for both Primary and Secondary students. Our Tech for Cyber Security sessions aligned with the Safer Internet Day theme, ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online’. In today’s digital world, teaching children how to navigate the online space safely and responsibly is more important than ever. We also explored the many exciting career opportunities in cyber security.<h3>Katie and Tex explore biometrics</h3>In collaboration with RAFCT, we introduced students to an exciting new animation: “Katie and Tex Explore Biometrics”. We took students on an adventure, exploring how biometric technology—like fingerprints and facial recognition—helps keep our digital world secure. By making these complex topics accessible and fun, we’re inspiring the next generation to think about the future of cyber security and their role in it. In this episode, Katie and Tex dive into the exciting world of augmented reality (AR). AR blends the real world with computer-generated images using devices like phones, tablets, or headsets. Unlike virtual reality (VR), which immerses users in a fully virtual environment through a headset, AR overlays digital objects onto the real world through a screen, allowing interaction via touch, voice, or device movement.AR is widely used for entertainment, from filters in videos and images to popular AR games. However, it's also making a significant impact in professional fields, such as the Royal Air Force (RAF) using AR for training and doctors incorporating it in medical education. This collaboration from 2024 -2027 is focused on inspiring young girls and women to pursue careers in technology, with a special emphasis on school children in West and South Yorkshire.Empowering the next generation of women in techThe underrepresentation of women in technology remains a significant challenge, but through partnerships like this, we're making strides towards change. Quickline’s partnership with Tech She Can will support our mission to increase the visibility and participation of women in tech, starting with young students. Together, we’re focusing on two key initiatives to help bridge this gap:1. Launching ‘Tech for Connectivity’Our first project under this partnership is the launch of a new classroom resource called ‘Tech for Connectivity,’ set to roll out during the Autumn term. This resource is designed for primary and secondary school students and aims to demystify the technology that powers online communication, such as Wi-Fi. Through engaging animations and lessons, students will learn how technology keeps us connected - and hopefully, be inspired to see tech as an exciting career path. This initiative will introduce thousands of students to the critical role that technology plays in our daily lives, and spark curiosity about careers in the field.2. Regional expansion of Tech She Can's educational teamThanks to Quickline’s support, we’re expanding our education team by adding two new teachers based in West and South Yorkshire. These educators will deliver inspiring tech lessons, work with schools each half term, and ensure our resources reach children early in their education. With a vision for women to be equal participants in the creation and development of new technology, business, products, and services that shape our world, Tech She Can is committed to ensuring that technology works for all. Uniting a unique community for change Tech She Can is proud to partner with a diverse community of over 250 industry organisations spanning 40+ sectors. By bridging education and industry, and representing a multitude of voices, Tech She Can is addressing the 'inspiration gap' and 'aspiration gap' to inspire all children, regardless of their background. To date, Tech She Can's proven educational materials, industry role models, and established reach have impacted over 120,000 children across UK classrooms. <h1>A manifesto for generational change</h1>So often, the educator’s voice is missing from the debate on tech skills and talent. To meet the urgent need for systemic change in tech education and careers, Tech She Can presents a comprehensive 3-step manifesto:1. Immediate actions: Change the ratio of women in tech by addressing structural barriers and societal perceptions. For example, establishing a joint DFE-DSIT cross-departmental unit, and launching a national public campaign to challenge perceptions of tech careers and reclaim the tech narrative, with a focus on girls and women.2. Within 3-5 years: Ensure meaningful, inclusive, and future-ready careers education for all, preparing young people for work and life at every age. This includes investment in early and sustained careers inspiration for parents, children, and teachers, and partnering with industry to co-create and deliver future-ready and industry-relevant experiences.3. Within 5-10 years: Modernise the STEM curriculum to make it relevant to all, especially girls. The City of London Corporation has today (29 April) launched a Taskforce to tackle the lack of women in digital roles after Alan Turing Institute data revealed that less than 25% of women work in AI and data science fields in the UK.

The City of London Corporation has today (29 April) launched a Taskforce to tackle the lack of women in digital roles after Alan Turing Institute data revealed that less than 25% of women work in AI and data science fields in the UK. Gender equity remains a challenge in these roles with estimates showing that there will be one skilled woman for every 115 tech roles by 2025 (1). The Women Pivoting to Digital Taskforce, which includes businesses such as IBM, Accenture and Salesforce, brings together business, Government, third sector and industry groups to support women from non-technical backgrounds to pivot to digital roles in AI, data, cyber and IT. Digital jobs are emerging and advancing rapidly, and as the momentum around AI accelerates, the Taskforce aims to knock down the barriers between women and these crucial roles. UNESCO data shows that by 2025 there will be 149 million new roles in software, data and AI across all sectors of the economy. And despite the need for vital skills training to fill these roles, only two percent of women are provided with opportunities to upskill at work (2). This initiative aims to support employers in the financial and professional services as well as technology sector to upskill workers while equipping organisations with the tools to hire women from non-technical backgrounds. Caroline Haines, Vice Chair of Policy and Resources at the City of London Corporation, who launched the event at Guildhall, said: “I am pleased to launch The Women Pivoting to Digital Taskforce which will encourage women to pivot to digital roles. The Taskforce will seek to give more opportunities and tools to women to close the growing digital skills gap. Achieving gender parity requires collective action from businesses, Government, and third sector organisations to make the digital workforce more diverse and inclusive.” Sheridan Ash, Founder and Chief Executive at Tech She Can said: “I am delighted to be co-Chair of this important Taskforce. To celebrate Earth Day and our Sustainable Travel Assembly on Monday 22 April, we’ve teamed up with children’s book publisher, <a href="https://www.questfriendz.com/">QuestFriendz</a>, to run a competition for children to use their STEM skills to design their very own sustainable vehicle.Open to individual children aged 4 to 11 years old and primary schools, the winner will receive a copy of <a href="https://www.questfriendz.com/en-gb/pages/the-case-of-the-stolen-sun">SuperQuesters: The Case of the Angry Sea</a> as well as Katie and Tex soft toys!&nbsp;The winner’s school will receive a set of the SuperQuesters series for their school library as well as a digital copy of <a href="https://www.questfriendz.com/en-gb/pages/the-case-of-the-stolen-sun">SuperQuesters: The Case of the Angry Sea</a>. About the charactersTex is a robotic dog who features in our series of <a href="https://techshecan.org/animated-lessons">Tech We Can animated lessons</a> for primary-age children. Each animation covers a different area of tech and gives children a simplified understanding of how it works and how it’s used. The SuperQuesters are three friends – Leo, Lilli and Bea – who are secret STEM superheroes and feature in the QuestFriendz SuperQuesters book series aimed at children aged 4-9.&nbsp; QuestFriendz aim to spark children's interest in STEM from a young age through interactive storytelling. In my last teaching job, I was really starting to see the potential of technology in lessons. And I don’t just mean smart boards, or I-Pads. But like me, if you’re wondering how you can make the most of it, here are some ways AI can save you time: 1. Creating Templates - Emails / LettersFor reporting pupil progress, preparing consent forms and beyond, communicating with pupil’s families is a massive part of working in a school. But writing those emails or letters takes up precious time, which usually means a longer day at work.AI can make short work of this, writing templates for your emails and letters.&nbsp; 2. Writing Example Texts For ActivitiesIf you’ve struggled to find examples of articles online without all the heavy advertisements and awkward formatting, or nothing in the textbooks quite fits around your lesson plan, this is a wonderful teacher hack.You can even ask the AI to intentionally make spelling errors in the text for a quick proofreading activity. 3. Produce Summaries and ReportsAI can also be used to speed up your reading and reporting process. If you have a large chunk of text, you can feed it to the AI and ask it for a summary. You can also reverse the process, asking for a report or longer comment based on a single sentence - useful for pupil report writing. 4. Search and FindLike a search engine, AI can scour the web for you and search out answers to your questions. If you need a list of sources on a topic, it can find them in a heartbeat. No more hours spent going through the search results yourself.Is AI Worth It?Overall, AI software should be taken with a pinch of salt. For content creators, media and SEO, it’s rocked the boat substantially. We’re excited to be launching the first of our new interactive live lessons on Tech for AI, in collaboration with Accenture. AI is rapidly advancing and this lesson will help students and teachers understand the impact of AI on all aspects of our lives. It will also highlight the many exciting careers and jobs available working with and developing AI. There are two lessons, which you can access using the videos above:&nbsp; Key Stage 2 / P4 - P7 in Scotland (Age 7-11) Key Stage 3 / S1 - S2 in Scotland (Age 11 - 14) &nbsp;During the lesson our experienced teacher delivers a virtual 60 minute interactive session, which includes lots of opportunity for partner talks, tasks, quizzes and videos. Pupils will be guided to complete paper-based tasks and partner discussions - they therefore need to be based at a table with a piece of paper and pen/pencil. This session is being delivered to complement Safer Internet Day 2024. Safer Internet Day takes place in February of each year to raise awareness of a safer and better internet for all, and especially for children and young people. However, it can be used at anytime during the school year as the content is relevant to many parts of the curriculum. <div>Careers education should start in primary school so that more children – and especially girls – have better chances of careers in tech, according to a new survey. </div><div>The survey of primary school teachers, carried out for Tech She Can – a charity campaigning for an increase in the number of women in tech careers – was launched today at Bett, the leading edtech conference being held at the ExCel, London. </div><div>Three key themes emerge from the research,&nbsp; each with major implications for future efforts to close the gender gap in STEM.&nbsp; </div><div>STEM stereotypes start early and are putting girls off tech careers. 71% of teachers believe that gender stereotypes around STEM careers start before the age of 11. Teachers say there are too few inclusive and diverse role models in career materials, with only half of respondents saying the careers materials they have access to are inclusive and diverse.&nbsp; </div><div>The STEM aspiration gap - gender and social mobility have a multiplying effect, with girls' who experience disadvantages more likely to perceive that a tech career is not for them. Despite 25% of girls enjoying STEM subjects more than boys, girls in state school are 69% less likely to aspire to STEM careers than boys. </div><div>Teachers need better career resources - the majority of primary school teachers believe that careers education is important, but only a small minority can access sufficient careers experiences for their students. 75% of primary teachers believe that careers education is important in primary schools, but only 15% of primary teachers felt that the career experiences they had access to were sufficient for their students. </div><div>The survey was carried out for Tech She Can by Templeton &amp; Partners, the tech recruitment agency.&nbsp; It surveyed 287 primary school teachers about the barriers in delivering STEM education and how government, businesses and charities can help schools to support female students into STEM careers. </div><div>Tech She Can commissioned the report because while <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5cfe713fed915d097daca4b5/No_Longer_Optional_Employer_Demand_for_Digital_Skills.pdf">80% of jobs in the UK</a> require at least some digital skills, females remain chronically under-represented in tech jobs.&nbsp; This means not only is the country missing out on wide pools of potential talent, but girls are excluded from rewarding career paths and lifetimes of opportunities.&nbsp; </div><div>Tech She Can says the survey shows why starting awareness of STEM careers at an early age is vital to preventing stereotypes and perceptions that STEM is not for girls.&nbsp; </div>Sheridan Ash, founder and Co-CEO of Tech She Can, said: “Today’s report finds that the saying, ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’ has never been more pertinent. Teachers overwhelmingly believe that children need real-life examples of&nbsp; relatable role models and information on career paths.“Girls are more likely to enjoy STEM subjects, but boys are more likely to believe in a tech career. The findings of the report show that gender and social mobility have a multiplying effect on gender stereotypes surrounding careers. Our CO CEO Dr Claire Thorne provided some thoughts on simple ways that you can have a big impact on young people’s aspirations. Here she gives her top tips on where to start: “Do you practice active careers inspiration? When children start to be curious about your job and ask you, “What did you do today?” don't just shut the conversation down and say ‘I do lots of emails’, or ‘I give presentations’. Instead, think about what interactions you’re having, who you’re working with, and why. What’s the goal? What tools are you using? Where are you working? What’s the environment, and your team, really like? And how do you know that you’ve done a good job, and how did it make you feel? Was there some place, something or someone that really inspired you today?&nbsp;“This could be around the breakfast table with a young person in your life, or it could be with a family friend. Anywhere really! And it’s never too early to start - especially as harmful gender stereotypes start to become embedded at such a young age. &nbsp;“Little and often is the key. If we wait to age 14, 15, 16 - when many children engage in formal work experience placements - to start discussing careers and pathways, and linking their passions to opportunities, it’s already too late.&nbsp;“So many of us ask children ‘what do you want to BE when you grow up?’ Children may not know the name of a particular role. Especially if they haven’t seen it themselves - in their everyday - or if it doesn’t have a uniform. Instead, try asking ‘what do you want to DO, change or build?’. Suddenly it’s not about a particular role or job title. It all feels less abstract. You will be amazed by their response and ignite their imagination!”“If you want to take active careers inspiration to the next level, you can become a Tech We Can Champion. It’s free. And it’s a great way to spend your CSR / volunteer days you may get at work. It’s fulfilling, and enlightening! The programme is open to everyone. We provide full training and packs to deliver lessons to primary and secondary children across the UK virtually or in-person. Since we became a charity, more than 500 men and women Champions have completed the training and delivered lessons to over 33,000 pupils. It’s incredible. These are real-life role models reaching and inspiring children in classrooms. They’re opening their eyes to the opportunities and benefits of tech careers, and so often they plant a seed - helping to set them on a path.“Our ambition is for our school’s programme, Tech We Can, to reach every child across the UK, at multiple times, at the moments that&nbsp; matter. Our innovative partnership with EdTech provider MCC Digital focuses on bringing tech to social mobility coldspots.

Our Education team regularly visit schools and deliver lessons to inspire girls and boys about tech careers. The lessons cover topics like how tech is used in cyber security, eSports and gaming, or to help the planet. We introduce children to new and emerging tech and help them to explore related careers.We tailor our lessons based on how much tech the school has access to. Some schools have limited resources, so we deliver ‘low tech’ lessons. Whereas in other schools every child has their own iPad. It’s therefore easier to integrate apps or online resources or even augmented reality into the lessons, making them more engaging and interactive.&nbsp;After each session we collect feedback from pupils and teachers to measure impact. Feedback on these sessions was overwhelmingly positive. When asked how we could improve the sessions, many pupils suggested that we could bring tech with us to use in the sessions, as many schools don’t have access to this.&nbsp;MCC Digital, an Apple authorised education specialist and reseller, approached us to partner on this project. They provided us with iPads and Sphero Indi robots, along with training on how to use them.&nbsp;Together we launched a pilot to explore the impact of taking tech into ‘low tech’ schools that are social mobility cold spots, or that have a high number of students receiving free school meals. We have been working together to improve access to this technology, and to educate students about tech careers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Poppy Patel, our Learning Design and Delivery Officer, explains what happens in each session:&nbsp;“I start each session by asking the children if they think they would like a career in technology in the future. The session then focuses on showing the children how technology is being used in areas relating to some of their hobbies and interests, including caring for the planet, sports, and entertainment and the arts. During the session, the children complete a range of fun and creative challenges linked to these areas using the iPads and Indi robots, and learn about related careers.&nbsp;“I love seeing the children enjoying using the tech and realising that the things that they love could lead them into a technology career one day. When I ask the children who might like a career in technology at the end of the session, it’s great to see the difference that the session has made in changing their perceptions and showing them what’s out there!”We have now visited five schools, and delivered our Tech Careers Inspiration session to over 250 Year 5 children in the West Midlands, and the results have been powerful. We’ve also had great feedback from teachers:“Year 5 had the most amazing time during the #TechSheCan sessions. They learnt about careers in technology, worked at some coding challenge and created augmented reality images.” Year 5 teacher&nbsp;“Highly engaging session which the children thoroughly enjoyed. It showed them a wide range of careers that they didn’t realise were out there and they were still talking about the car challenge days later.” Teacher&nbsp;Alex Langton, Head of Marketing at MCC Digital said:&nbsp;“We’re incredibly proud of the support we are providing for our first official charity partner Tech She Can. We are delighted to announce that we are officially a partner of the Bett Show, taking place at ExCeL London from 24 to 26 January 2024. We are also honoured to be the very first charity partner for the Bett Awards.&nbsp;Our relationship with the Bett Show goes back a few years, when our team attended the show as delegates. They were so impressed by the scale and professionalism of the event. Thanks to support from our Strategic Partners, we were then able to host our own stand in 2020. We returned in 2023 and made some amazing connections - both with pupils, teachers and other organisations who share our missions.&nbsp; Our Co CEO also took part in a panel discussion about diversity in tech.&nbsp;Taking part in the Bett Show has been one of the key factors in raising awareness of the work we do and in achieving 5x growth in our direct reach from 2022 to 2023. The University of Birmingham is partnering with Tech She Can in its mission to #ChangeTheRatio of women in technology. As a strategic partner it is committed to ensuring inclusive access to technology training and creating the right environment to attract, retain and advance females in technology. The University of Birmingham Coding Bootcamps have been very successful in increasing diversity in the tech industry, with students going on to work for Gymshark, the BBC and the Economist. Here we share Sumaya’s story.&nbsp; &nbsp;[Video: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1cysjD4KoY">Skills Bootcamps at the University of Birmingham – YouTube</a>]&nbsp;Coding Skills Bootcamps have emerged as a popular alternative to more traditional routes into tech careers, providing people early in their careers and career changers with a fast track to becoming proficient coders. These short-term, intensive training programs offer a hands-on and practical approach to learning coding skills, enabling people to enter the tech industry swiftly.In a very competitive market, where the digital skills gap continues to widen, it is also a great way for employers to recruit, retain and upskill staff.Sumaya Hassan, 30, started her Skills Bootcamp journey during lockdown. Before joining, she had an interest in web design. Speaking to <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/uknews/21690540/adult-education-skills-bootcamps-skills-for-life-dfe/">The Sun</a>, she explains: “I’d built a website using instructions I found online, and couldn’t believe I could create something out of nothing just like that,” says Sumaya.&nbsp;“I wanted to learn more, but I didn’t think it was possible for me – I didn’t have the money, and it felt too late to learn something new.”&nbsp;“I discovered there were short courses at the University of Birmingham,” she explains. “So, I applied to join one of their coding bootcamps.”With lessons conducted online in the evenings and at weekends, Sumaya had the flexibility to fit it around her family commitments.&nbsp;“It was challenging, but so much fun,” she says. “I was juggling a lot, but I received a lot of practical and emotional support from the university.“My favourite project was when a group of us used the programming languages we’d learnt to build a mindfulness and journalling app. It came out beautifully, and seeing what we had achieved made me realise a career in coding was definitely for me.”During her final project, Sumaya was approached by the clothing brand Gymshark and was offered a job as a front-end website developer.“I was so proud of what I’d achieved during the bootcamp, and now I have a new career, which I never dreamt would happen,” she says. “If you want to learn a new skill, regardless of your age or background, I’d say go for it because your life could change for the better.”Coding boot camps are geared towards people of all backgrounds, including complete beginners with little or no prior coding experience. They have contributed to increasing diversity in the tech sector by attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities.&nbsp;Kerry Blondell, a recruiter from Cognizant, explains, “The impact of bootcamps has allowed us to be a lot more agile in terms of how we provide recruitment services to our clients. It allows us to target specific skills as well, and it allows us to target a bigger breadth of the type of people that are coming into Cognizant.“The main benefits from bootcamps as an employer means it allows us to react a lot quicker for what the business and client need. It also allows us to attract a larger talent pool in terms of diversity, inclusion and especially social mobility as well.&nbsp;“The advice that I can give to other employers about bootcamps: just be brave, be bold, and go against the grain!”The University of Birmingham’s flexible Skills Bootcamps allow people to gain the technical and digital skills needed for their career by studying alongside existing commitments. Today we dove into the world where technology meets sport! &nbsp; Qualified primary school teacher Becky Patel delivered an online assembly looking at the latest developments in tech for sport. She explained some cool new advances in tech, including:<ul><li>Hidden tech in trainers &nbsp;</li><li>AR ski glasses that show how fast you're going&nbsp;</li><li>Hoverboards - a skateboard without wheels! Safer Internet Day: Huge numbers of children attend our Tech for Cyber Security live assembly

We are proud to have supported Safer Internet Day by delivering our new Tech for Cyber Security Assembly live to more than 13,000 students. The students from all across the UK joined a live webinar hosted by our Strategic Partner, Computeam. During this brand new Tech We Can session, children explore the concepts of cyber security, hacking and phishing and learn about the technology which is being used and developed to strengthen cyber security. They are also crucially introduced to a range of careers using technology in cyber security and encouraged to think about what the future of cyber security may look like. We are also delighted that our latest Katie and Tex animation is featured in this session. This brand new animation, sponsored by our strategic partner, Morgan Stanley and produced by Bold Content, sees Katie and Tex explore what an ethical hacker does and why these roles are so critical to cyber security. Tech She Can was privileged to make the national news in December 2023 with the release of our latest <a href="https://techshecan.org/animated-lessons/the-cloud">Tech We Can animated lesson</a> all about the cloud which was featured on the ITV national news. In this animation, which was sponsored by our Strategic Partner Computeam and produced by Bold Content, Katie and Tex are joined by superstar real-life Tech We Can student, Ava who, just like her character in the animation, has cerebral palsy. Katie, Tex and Ava are joined by role model Harriet from Computeam who helps to explain what the cloud is and how important it is to the safety of lots of our data. When interviewed by the ITV news, Ava talked inspiringly about her role in the animation and how technology is for everyone. But they’re struggling to come up with ideas by themselves. They think the best people to help them are the children who might play with these toys. Tex: “Can you help us with ideas for a new techy toy? To help the elves build it, please can you label your designs, explaining the toy’s techy features, how someone could play with it and how it’s different from toys you can buy today." B-bot: “I can’t wait to see what you come up with! And as a thank-you for helping us out, our favourite design will win a copy of the book, SuperQuesters: The Case of the Stolen Sun. </div><h3>How it works</h3>The competition is open to all children in the UK and Ireland. To take part, children need to design a techy toy. This can be in any format - whether that’s a computer-generated image, a paper sketch or a physical model. For inspiration, you might find it useful to show your students or children our free Tech We Can lesson<a href="on-demand-lessons/toys"> ‘Tech for Toys’</a>, where we explore how technology is being used to design and create toys and highlight some of the exciting careers in this area. The animations are designed to educate and excite children about technology, and the people who develop it, from an early age. Each animation covers a different area of tech and gives children a simplified understanding of how it works and how it’s used. Aimed at inspiring students about pursuing a future career in technology and, ultimately diversifying the future pipeline of tech talent, these insight days offer a ‘behind-the-scenes’ experience into organisations for both young students, teachers and careers advisors. Ten female students&nbsp; experienced a 'day in the life' at Deutsche Bank. They met a diverse range of inspirational role models, shadowed employees and took part in hands-on activities to understand how technology is used within the organisation and the routes into tech careers. By the end of the day, the students had all broadened their understanding of the breadth and variety of job roles in technology and understood the different routes into these jobs. 100% of the students said that the day had changed their minds about their future education and career choices. Compared to 30% at the start of the day, 100% of the students said they were now considering doing an apprenticeship. Our ‘Young women in tech’ campaign - a collaboration between Tech She Can, <a href="https://workfinder.com/">Workfinder</a>, <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-digital-culture-media-sport/about">DCMS</a>, <a href="https://www.everywoman.com/">everywoman</a> and <a href="https://wearetechwomen.com/">WeAreTechWomen</a> - features short self-filmed videos of inspiring young women talking about their roles, highlighting the variety of tech careers that exist as well as the many different routes people take into them. Tech for Planet: new Tech We Can lesson for kids

Since the COP26 climate summit earlier this month, topics such as sustainable living and protecting the future of our planet have dominated the news agenda, as well as entering our everyday conversations, including those taking place in schools and among young people. Today, we’re delighted to announce the release of our latest free on-demand Tech We Can lesson, ‘Tech for the Planet’. Aimed at children aged 8-14, this lesson aims to show some of the innovative ways in which technologists around the world are using technology to protect our air, reduce waste, help clean the oceans and preserve our wildlife. It also highlights some of the role models working in these areas which we hope will inspire young viewers to consider a future career in technology. Many thanks to Lucinda Jones from Unilever and Mikya Rozner from Tesco for featuring in this lesson and sharing what their roles involve. You can watch the lesson, taught by Becky Patel and Katie King in our new studio, above. On 28 September 2021, we got together with our members, trustees and guest speakers to celebrate Tech She Can becoming an independent charity, committed to improving the ratio of women working in technology roles.With an opening speech from one of our original founding members, Sandy Lacey-Aberdein, Head of Talent at Zoopla who kindly hosted the event, we went on to hear from our CEOs about future ambitions for Tech She Can. Our <a href="https://www.techshecan.org/about-us#trustees">trustees</a> took part in a panel session sharing stories about the challenges they face in relation to diversity within their own organisations, as well as the importance of visible role models, and how, by working together, we can make a real difference to improving the gender balance in tech. We were also delighted to have Priya Guha MBE join us as our keynote speaker. Priya highlighted how critical it is for women to participate in the design and development of technology if we're to solve today's biggest societal problems.You can hear more about our journey so far and how we're looking forward to working with our members to extend our impact even further in this short video, filmed at the launch event. According to PwC’s <a href="https://www.pwc.co.uk/who-we-are/women-in-technology/time-to-close-the-gender-gap.html">Women in tech: Time to close the gender gap report</a>, only 3% of girls say a career in technology is their first choice.Tech She Can was created by PwC in 2018 along with 18 founding organisations following a <a href="https://www.pwc.co.uk/who-we-are/women-in-technology/time-to-close-the-gender-gap.html">PwC research initiative</a> into why girls and young women are less likely to study technology-based subjects, and pursue tech careers. Today, it is a charity with over 200 member organisations, with the Tech She Can Strategic Partners being: PwC, Google, NatWest, Centrica, Credit Suisse, UST, Morgan Stanley, Tesco, Nationwide and Zoopla. Other members include the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Channel 4 and come from a wide range of industries committed to collaborating to address the gender imbalance in technology roles in the UK.&nbsp;Sheridan Ash MBE and Dr Claire Thorne are the new co-CEOs of the Tech She Can charity. Sheridan Ash is PwC UK’s Technology Innovation Leader and was recognised with an MBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to young girls and women through technology. Dr Claire Thorne has a background in innovation strategy, R&amp;D and commercialisation spanning universities, government and business. Now, as a woman in tech, a returner and a mum, I see first-hand the urgent need to inspire our next generation when they ask ‘what can I be when I grow up?’, to equip their schools and parents with the technology literacy they need to be able to make those routes a reality, and to value and retain our female talent, against the odds.”<h2>Tech We Can now reaches 630 schools</h2>In 2019, Tech She Can launched an online portal - called <a href="/tech-we-can/">Tech We Can</a> - following two successful pilots with schools across the UK. The online portal provides lesson plans for teachers which can be taught to girls and boys aged 9-14, with the aim of inspiring school students across the country to consider a career in technology, and boost the diversity of future technologists. The lesson plans are designed for teachers to adapt based on the technologies available at each participating school and showcase the breadth and depth of tech careers and highlight real life role models, especially females, from across the Tech She Can signatories. Tech We Can now reaches 630 schools across the UK.&nbsp;During the pandemic, Tech We Can at Home was launched giving parents and carers access to lesson plans and a series of shorter online sessions, ‘Tech Tuesdays’ were run for 10 consecutive weeks, designed to be viewed on demand in the classroom or at home. There have now been over 1,300 home users of the lesson plans and over 7,500 total views of the Tech Tuesdays. Students and homeschoolers have taken part across the globe from the UK to Australia, Greece, India, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, the USA and Qatar.&nbsp;<h2>New initiatives</h2>Tech She Can piloted its very first apprenticeship scheme during the pandemic when Zoopla took onboard 10 trainee software engineers who participated in a 10 week virtual bootcamp. Findings from the boot camp were also used to help Centrica increase their share of female engineering apprentices to 40%. More recently, PwC, Zoopla, Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley joined up to deliver Tech She Can’s first ‘Career Insight Programme’ for Year 11 students to find out how technology is used, the types of tech careers that exist, and meet role models from these organisations. The charity is looking to scale these initiatives with apprenticeships, career insights, and work experience weeks becoming a core part of its strategy.Tech We Can Champions is a newer initiative which allows the employees of the member organisations to receive training in order to give back to their local schools and communities.<h2>Partnerships helping give Tech She Can a greater impact</h2>With the UK facing a critical technology skills shortage, Tech She Can has formed joint initiatives with a number of key partners including the DCMS and the Digital Skills Partnership, Future Dot Now, STEM learning, and Tech Talent Charter.
